The Bosscha Observatory 💫
THE BOSSCHA History The Bosscha Observatory (formerly known as Bosscha Sterrenwacht) was built at the initiation of Karel Albert Rudolf (K.A.R.) Bosscha. Assisted by his nephew, R.A. Kerkhoven and a Dutch East Indies astronomer, Joan George Erardus Gijsbertus Voûte, Bosscha gathered interested people to form an association that would realize the idea of building an observatory. At a meeting on 12 September 1920 at the Homann Hotel in Bandung, the Dutch East Indies Astronomical Association or Nederlandsch-Indische Sterrenkundige Vereniging (NISV) was formed which had the specific goal of "establishing and maintaining an astronomical observatory in the Dutch East Indies, and advancing the science of astronomy". Karel Bosscha was willing to be the main funder and promised to provide assistance in purchasing telescopes. As an appreciation for the services of K.A.R.
